Intel logo Originally scheduled for a 2010 release, the Larrabee project was an effort to create a new type of GPU based on modified Pentium cores! In 2009, the project had reached a sufficiently advanced stage for mainstream testing, only for Intel's engineers to realise that the product was in too immature a state to stand up against even a GeForce GTX285. The Larrabee subsequently vanished into the corporate shadows.

Since then, there has been no real news about the project, and it was rumoured to be dead. However, TechEye.net would seem to be carrying some information regarding the Larrabee's possible resurgence. The latest incarnation of the GPGPU is being discretely prepared in Intel's labs. Where many companies tend to seek profit only attainable in the short term, Intel has the means to finance expensive projects over the course of many years, waiting until the market is ripe and demand for their new technologies is strong. However, it would seem that Intel overestimated matters, and the Larrabee project was perhaps too technically advanced for a 2010 release.

This new information should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as the person interviewed by TechEye.net admitted that Intel has conducted a massive disinformation campaign surrounding the Larrabee project ever since its initial public announcement.

We shall have to wait a while longer before we can tell whether or not Intel will revolutionize our folding with their shiny new tech.
