The relatively unknown, but highly prolific RAM manufacturer Elpida has recently been conducting the pilot production of 40nm 2Gb DDR3 RAM, utilising 6F2 process technology.Production of the test batch was carried out at Elpida's Hiroshima fabrication centre, and mass volume production could well be feasible sometime in 2010. The company currently uses 65nm XS technology for the vast majority its RAM, but is now set to migrate half of its 12-inch capacity of 130,000 wafers to a 40nm process by the end of 2010.
Rexchip Electronics - an Elpida subsidiary - is also planning a similar move, only this time with their entire stock. If, however, they find there is not enough consumer demand, they will only migrate half of its production to the 40nm process.
In related news, the two companies are reputedly planning to develop 40nm chips with 4F2 process technology early next year.
