nVidia logo Today marks the formal launch of nVidia's GeForce GT240.

The launch was conducted with the utmost discretion, and no press release was issued.

On the technical side of things, the GeForce 240GT is built around a GT215 chip on a 40nm process, and has 96 shader processors. These are clocked at 1340MHz, while the rest of the GPU will run at 550MHz.

Beware, however, in your choice of the memory type in the variant you purchase. There exist the choices of DDR-3 900MHz, GDDR-3 1GHz or GDDR-5 1.7 GHz. In all cases, we recommend the models that have GDDR5; its higher bandwidth will give better results in games, and the ECC will reduce the number of memory-related calculation errors in Folding@Home.

This card should stand between the 9600GT and the 9600GSO in terms of performance, and the energy consumption has been advertised at 69W maximum.

The GeForce GT 240 should be priced between €80 and €90.
