After switching from Windows 2008 R2 on an SSD to Open SuSE on a SATA laptop drive, there's been a minor points change:
W2K8 - 36,803 ppd
Linux - 59,751 ppd
Wow. Just Wow. A 65% points increase switching from a Windows OS on an SSD drive, to Linux on a laptop drive ??? WTF ?

I guess it's worth digging a bit ... if Linux is more efficient than Windows, many people would like to know more about it ...
I've been trawling through the tpf's being posted over on foldingforum and there does seem to be an improvement when switching to Linux.
I've been looking for matching similar (identical when possible) hardware comparing 6900 to 6901.
Under Windows the times are pretty much identical, under Linux the times are significantly faster. ie A 3.8GHz i7-930 on linux gets around 38K with linux, vs a 4.1 i7-930 getting 31K under windows.
I've only three data points so far, but they are all consistent - A5 under linux outfolds Windows.

Nice boost there - is the SMP2 (6.34) client really that good?! I used to fold -bigadv on Linux in the past and I can remember some performance increase vs. WinXP. However there were some A3 issues amd I switched to Windows 7. Could Linux beat Windows 7 as well?

It's the core A5, thats so good on Linux. The TPF frame improvements I've seen posted range from 10% - 20%. For me personally, it's just over a 29% improvement in TPF, and 60% in PPD. Between shutting down GPU folding on that box, BIOS tweaking and switching to Linux, I'm actually doing about 90% more PPD, and took 20 hours off the time to do a bigadv WU.
I'd estimate, and it's only a guess based on other times posted, your machine would be looking at around 19:00 TPF for 74K PPD

In other words, there are no benefits with 6.34 and A5 folding under windows. The optimizations are for Linux only.

The switch to A5 has just started ... you probably saw one of the last A3 BigAdv
I recalculated the PPD/Watt and Point/KWh for the dual 4180 after switching to linux and removing the video card - using the onboard video only.
CPU Project - 6901
TPF - 21:23
PPD - 61.073
Watts - 240
KWh/Day (total)- 5.76
PPD/Watt (total)- 254.4
Points/KWh (total) - 10,602
I won't complain about that :-)
