jimerickson: Congratulations rhavern!

rhavern: Quad G34s rock. Mine puts out ~600kPPD.

MarkAGR: Uh? Just woke up from my winter hibernation ... Good Morning everyone! I nearly made it 23m over the winter! I think there's a quad cpu G34 machine on it's way.

toTOW: Anyone alive ?

toTOW: Happy new year to all fellow folders :)

warmon6: Look like the web site needs an update or 2. starting to see cob webs. (could at least mention about bigadv change happening in Jan. ;)

toTOW: Recredit has ben run ... all points should show up now :)

toTOW: Stats are down since the last network outage :(

MarkAGR: OK, so there's a 16 core minimum ... so does anyone know how to produce a 16 core virtual machine from a cluster of ubuntu boxes?

MarkAGR: Where did all thw stats go?

jimerickson: Http://bit.ly/tkpFnJ

jimerickson: 16 core minimum for bigadv. wow!

Adanorm: Hi ! We just applied patches to the site, if shoutbox goes mad, just CTRL+F5 !

jimerickson: Http://bit.ly/okqvf7

jimerickson: Happily folding smp now. and currently earning 2000ppd more than with bigadv. go figure.

jimerickson: I detest p2684, after this one is finished i am moving to smp.

Amaruk: FahCore 11 (ATI) support is scheduled to end September 1st. http://en.fah-addict.net/news/news.php?id=352

hootis: >toTow I think i saw it somewhere either on the folding forum or here, but i cant remember. just wondering if any1 knew.

toTOW: Divery> yes, a little ... on an i7 920 @3.5 GHz (no GPU), I get something like 15k PPD with regular SMP and 22k on BigAdv ...

toTOW: Hootis> did we mention it in one of our news ? anyway I don't remember :(

divery4eyes: Am thinking of adding a couple of smp boxen. is big adv still preferable over regular smp.

hootis: Dose anyone know when the ATi Gpu2 clients are going to be phased out?

MarkAGR: Sniff sniff :(

KaySL: That might explain the weirdly low point yield I'm now getting...

jimerickson: Bigadv bonus reduced from 50% to 20%

I'm looking at building a new dedicated to folding box - using a dual processor AMD 4180 (hex core) 4180, but can't seem to find any benchmarks/reviews of the chip. Is anyone out there using one and willing to give some feedback on the folding oomph of the cpu ?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, since AMD is a bit less efficient on FAH, many folders buy Intel ... :(

But you might be able to find a few numbers for the AMD systems on the official forum in the BigAdv section ... (but it will probably quickly depress you :()

Totow,

Yeah - the bigadv times are a little depressing, but the Lisbon based chips have much better floating point, so was hoping they'd be better folders than their predecessors. eg: A dual 4180 (12 cores total @ 2.7GHz) gets about 10% better SPECfp than a quad 8356 (16 cores total @ 2.3GHz), throw in faster HT, DDR3 vs DDR2... was just hoping someone else had tried it before I committed the $.

Thanks.

They'll still have a hard time to beat two overclocked hexa core Xeons on a SR2 motherboard ... :(

For anyone that was wondering about the Opteron as a folding chip....

I went ahead and did the upgrade. Purchased motherboard, cpus and heatsinks - reused case/disk drive/optical disk/case/power supply/vid cards. and used spare DDR3 memory. Total upgrade cost around $700. And I have to say I'm happy. It's not a 160K PPD SR-2 monster, but given the total upgrade cost was far less than a single hexa core Intel Xeon ......

The numbers .....

CPU - 2 * AMD Opteron 4180 @ 2.60 GHz - 6 cores/threads per CPU - 12 Cores total, 31.2Ghz
Motherboard - ASUS KCMA-D8
Memory - 4 * 2GB DDR3 PC10600/1333
Video - Nvidia 8800 & 9600 @ 1600MHz Shader

Idle Power - 230 Watts
Ambient Temp - 23.5C
Idle CPU Temps - 38/34C
KWh/day - 5.52

CPU Only

CPU Project - 6900
TPF - 33:30
PPD - 31,650
Watts - 405
Watts over Idle - 175
CPU Temps - 56/51C

KWh/Day (total)- 9.72
KWh/Day (over idle) - 4.2
PPD/Watt (total)- 78.15
Points/KWh (total) - 3,256
PPD/Watt (Over Idle) - 180.85
Points/KWh (Over Idle) - 7,535

CPU + 2 * GPU

CPU Project - 6900
TPF - 35:32
PPD - 29006
8800 Project - 11179
8800 TPF - 4:14
8800 PPD - 4,598
9600 Project - 11179
9600 TPF - 4:03
9600 PPD - 4,807

Total PPD - 38,411

Watts - 502
Watts over Idle - 272
CPU Temps - 58/54C

KWh/Day (Total) - 12.05
KWh/day (Over Idle) - 6.53
PPD/Watt (total)- 76.52
Points/KWh (total) - 3,187
PPD/Watt (Over Idle) - 141.22
Points/KWh (Over Idle) - 5,884

BTW - If you get one of these boards and are using three pin CPU fan headers - make sure to set the jumper for 3 pin CPU fans from the default 4 pin CPU fan - the fan noise is intolerable if not correctly set.

This was an update from a Q6600 doing around 12K ppd, so 26K more PPD for $700, and about the same running cost. I'm happy :clap

CPU cooler - Noctua NH-D14
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7
Memory - Kingston 3 * 2GB DDR3 PC12800/1600
GPU - AMD Radeon HD 6870

Idle Power - 151 Watts
Ambient Temp - 22.0C
Idle CPU Temps - 40°C
KWh/day - 3.62

CPU Only

CPU Project - 6900
TPF - 32:01
PPD - 33,979
Watts - 253
Watts over Idle - 102
CPU Temp - 62°C

KWh/Day (total) - 6.07
KWh/Day (over idle) - 2.45
PPD/Watt (total)- 134.30
Points/KWh (total) - 5,597
PPD/Watt (Over Idle) - 333.12
Points/KWh (Over Idle) - 13,869

Note: I really hope that AMD will succeed with the bulldozer architecture.
...as do I hope that PG would release some new clients for AMD GPUs soon.

Foldon,

Thanks for the details - must say I'm a little surprised, I'd have expected an overclocked i7 to draw more power than that, and to get warmer - my i7-860 @ 3.8 runs at around 81-83C. What are you cooling that with ?

Hi,

I'm using Noctua NH-D14 in an Lian Li PC-A77F case (see picture).
Front: 3x 120 mm fan
Top: 2x 140 mm fan
Rear: 1x Noctua NF-S12B-FLX

I've not raised the voltage that high, but the CPU is working absolutely stable at 4GHz +

Damn - that is a beast of a heatsink!

I'm waitting on the delivery of a pair of Noctua NH-U12DO's to replace the ( extremely) noisy Dynatrons I'm currently using, expecting a decent drop in temps with them as well.

I'm using an NH-U12-SE2 for my i7 860 setup (Same charasteristics as the DO).
This one is even more silent than the UD14.

Since I have both a 920 and a 860, I must admit that I like the 920 more : as soon as I touch the Vcore of the 860, the temperatures are getting high quite fast ... :s

Got the NH-U12DO's today - and Holy Crap!! What a difference! Not only can I hear myself think, the temp drop is phenomenal.

With the Dynatrons (and Dynatron paste) the temps were stabilizing around 62C. Replacing the Dynatron paste with Artic Silver brought that down to 55-58C. With the Nocturas (and installed the CPU's are sitting at 41C & 45C. CPU 2 is warmer as the sink on CPU1 vents directly into the fan for 2.

Getting the sinks installed was "fun" - the Nocturas are large sinks, and the KCMA is an ATX sized board. The Nocturas can be installed blowing front to back, or rotated 90 degrees blowing bottom to top. With the KCMA the only option is front to back - and there's less than an inch clearance between 1 & 2 installed.

Anyone want to buy a pair of socket F/C42 Dynatron heatsinks - only slightly used ... :whistle

After switching from Windows 2008 R2 on an SSD to Open SuSE on a SATA laptop drive, there's been a minor points change:

W2K8 - 36,803 ppd
Linux - 59,751 ppd

Wow. Just Wow. A 65% points increase switching from a Windows OS on an SSD drive, to Linux on a laptop drive ??? WTF ?
