I'm looking at building a new dedicated to folding box - using a dual processor AMD 4180 (hex core) 4180, but can't seem to find any benchmarks/reviews of the chip. Is anyone out there using one and willing to give some feedback on the folding oomph of the cpu ?

Unfortunately, since AMD is a bit less efficient on FAH, many folders buy Intel ... 
But you might be able to find a few numbers for the AMD systems on the official forum in the BigAdv section ... (but it will probably quickly depress you)

Yeah - the bigadv times are a little depressing, but the Lisbon based chips have much better floating point, so was hoping they'd be better folders than their predecessors. eg: A dual 4180 (12 cores total @ 2.7GHz) gets about 10% better SPECfp than a quad 8356 (16 cores total @ 2.3GHz), throw in faster HT, DDR3 vs DDR2... was just hoping someone else had tried it before I committed the $.

They'll still have a hard time to beat two overclocked hexa core Xeons on a SR2 motherboard ...
Now if only my budget could stretch to one of those setups ;-)
On the bright side, Bulldozer for desktops are coming out around Q2 2011.
For anyone that was wondering about the Opteron as a folding chip....
I went ahead and did the upgrade. Purchased motherboard, cpus and heatsinks - reused case/disk drive/optical disk/case/power supply/vid cards. and used spare DDR3 memory. Total upgrade cost around $700. And I have to say I'm happy. It's not a 160K PPD SR-2 monster, but given the total upgrade cost was far less than a single hexa core Intel Xeon ......

BTW - If you get one of these boards and are using three pin CPU fan headers - make sure to set the jumper for 3 pin CPU fans from the default 4 pin CPU fan - the fan noise is intolerable if not correctly set.

Thanks for the details - must say I'm a little surprised, I'd have expected an overclocked i7 to draw more power than that, and to get warmer - my i7-860 @ 3.8 runs at around 81-83C. What are you cooling that with ?

I'm using an NH-U12-SE2 for my i7 860 setup (Same charasteristics as the DO).
This one is even more silent than the UD14.

Since I have both a 920 and a 860, I must admit that I like the 920 more : as soon as I touch the Vcore of the 860, the temperatures are getting high quite fast ... 
Got the NH-U12DO's today - and Holy Crap!! What a difference! Not only can I hear myself think, the temp drop is phenomenal.
With the Dynatrons (and Dynatron paste) the temps were stabilizing around 62C. Replacing the Dynatron paste with Artic Silver brought that down to 55-58C. With the Nocturas (and installed the CPU's are sitting at 41C & 45C. CPU 2 is warmer as the sink on CPU1 vents directly into the fan for 2.
Getting the sinks installed was "fun" - the Nocturas are large sinks, and the KCMA is an ATX sized board. The Nocturas can be installed blowing front to back, or rotated 90 degrees blowing bottom to top. With the KCMA the only option is front to back - and there's less than an inch clearance between 1 & 2 installed.
Anyone want to buy a pair of socket F/C42 Dynatron heatsinks - only slightly used ...
